I walked into a shop the other day and realised I had mud on my jeans from gardening and my t-shirt was on inside out.

My girlfriend has to go get changed from whatever she was wearing inside to an entirely new outfit to simply walk to the shops.

Right? I'm not thinking about that when picking out an outfit to go out. I look at my closet and grab the first thing I see that will fit the occasion. That's putting way too much thought into it.

I guess if you only wore one exact same outfit everytime, it might be a little weird, and I'd notice, but who really cares? Exceptions still made for formal wear. I wear the same suit to every wedding. Those mfers are expensive, okay? I do change the shirt/tie tho

Exactly. I pick out whatever is at the top of the drawer and wear it. Also I wear the exact same thing I’ve worn for the last 50 years. Tshirt, jeans, boots or sneakers, military style cap. Probably be buried the same.

I just want to feel comfortable in whatever I'm wearing and if it looks nice, it's a bonus. I don't care how others dress to be honest, as long as they have manners and are polite they can dress however they feel like. In the end of the day, fashion was created to segregate people and to accommodate greed and vanity. Yes some days I may wear a suit if I feel like it, others I just go on a pijama shopping. In some societies however it's funny that you're treated totally different depending on how you're wearing. I had a situation once that a lady seller in a shop decided to give me a cold sholder treatment because I was wearing sweatpants and a hoodie.... Spent my money elsewhere.

Absolutely. I loathe judgey-types. I grew up pretty poor, with hem-lines on my jeans and hand me downs. I look down on nobody, and if someone wants to look down on me I’ll just cheerfully tell ‘em to get bent and be on my way.

What would "set off" is having the same outfit every day.

I used to buy dupes to cycle through the week, at one point, someone asked out of concern if I was short on money at work. I laughed and said "no, I just bought 3 dupes, that's why you see me wearing the same shirt most of the week". (Rule of buying in 3s, cuz I'm a skinny tall boi and it's hard to find shirts)

It changed it so that it would be "X Y Z outfit for every day of the week" that I would mix the cycle. Still some dupes.

I worked with a super toxic lady that cared. She made fun of guys wearing the same colors as other guys "what did you call each other and decide on blue today" me looks at sleeve seeing I am wearing blue and just noticing the dude i am working with is also wearing blue. "yep". (Funny once or twice ) after 3 years super old.

She found cartoon characters that looked like her co-workers and put them on their wall, she would tell you others, but not yours, like I couldn't figure out which one was mine.

The thing is I didn't care about her opinion. We even all wore the same color to mess with her.

Very true. I once got scolded for wearing the same dress to a wedding ceremony and the reception because there was a three hour gap in between, therefore I should have worn two different dresses. Every comment and scolding were from the women. Personally, I found it amusing that this upset them. Who gives a fuck.

How does this actually happen? As in, ELI5, please. Do other women come up and say “you really shouldn’t be wearing that dress to both” or something like that? Are these just any old women there, or are they family members or “elders” or something?

lol First of all, do not fuck with older women, they can smile and speak like a ventriloquist while pinching your elbow, pulling you in and with few words destroy any scrap of self esteem you have left. So it’s definitely the “elders”, usually family, but even if they’re strangers, it doesn’t stop them. Then there’s those that will wait till you’re within earshot and talk shit about you to someone else, but it’s really for you to hear. My own mum said two words to me and I knew exactly what she was talking about, looked me up and down and said how embarrassing. I like to have fun with my mum and her fragile sensibilities, I can’t recall my exact words but I said something like really? I haven’t even started drinking yet, sit back and enjoy. lol so yeah, some women are amazing and will always have your back and others are absolutely awful to one another.

Had that happen to me too in High School a few years ago, I once mentioned to another girl that i had the same dress as her, at home and she told me not to wear it, (Since the day back then, girls were allowed to dress up with sleevless dresses) Luckily for her, i didn't give a fuck and came with the same dress as her and wore it until the event was over. Oh and she was my bully back in High school.

You know what, not OP but hey, I’ll just jump in.

The concept of “women can’t wear the same dress 2 times in a row while men can wear whatever they want however many times they want in a row” is an ideology primarily attributed to a patriarchal society, where women are valued on how they look. If there is a group of women, and one is targeting another because of the way she dresses, like wearing the same dress two occasions in a row, it’s because the woman shaming the second woman has either:

Internalized misogyny stemming from her culture or upbringing

Deep-seated insecurities about herself, which get exacerbated when women’s “goals” are to look good.

Now if I’m understanding the tooth analogy correctly, you seem to think feminism is “men bad”, when in reality, all we want to do is be able to survive as free individuals and take a look at the power structures that exist in the modern world (many of which can be seen in a patriarchal context) and determine if what we’re doing is actually fair or if it’s only fair for the people who implemented them, namely white Christian men.

DKzDK

DKzDK

While I’ll jump in here, and without attacking either of you here.

The OP photo in question, and the way Binko may see it. The man is calling out the woman’s bullshit and the way she’s being “gender bias” and spouting off about “male privilege” when in reality, the dudes answer of “straight men don’t give a shit” is the harsh reality.

As for the bad tooth analogy.. the point he made was simple there. Your can’t blame a tooth cavity on anybody but yourself, even if the thought of “men telling you to brush your teeth” sounds misogynistic.

The only “internalized misogyny” in this discussion, is from this woman to play victim and place blame elsewhere.

The implication is that somehow either it’s the fault of men that women don’t wish to wear the same dress or that men play some type of negative role in it.

What a silly argument. Women aren't assholes in the way men are to each other either.

The important part of this conversation is that people of both sexes are assholes to each other, and it's silly and pointless to pick and choose each case to figure out who has it worse rather than admiting that there's a wider issue of dumb expectations of how people should act.

But I reckon you know that already, even if it's deep down.

thanksyalll

Yep. People are just sick and tired of hearing people complain about privilege in such a broad swooping manner. MichaelScottsWormguy

4 points

Yeah, but it’s completely unnecessary to drag men into it. You can literally just say ‘here is a problem I’ve dealt with’ and leave it at that. By talking about men, you imply that they are somehow part of the problem even though that is not the case.

thanksyalll

0 points

But men aren't really dragged into it. I don't understand why you think "Framing the issue as ‘male privilege’ is a blatant attempt to stir up negativity towards men." People just want others to admit it? Why? Doesn’t change anything. It’s because they want to knock them down a notch by instilling this notion they have something better and they did nothing to deserve it. Crabs in a barrel. “If I can’t have it, neither should anyone else!”

Skoodge42

"a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group."

That's literally how the term has always been used. Men can wear the same clothes without any criticism and women can't. That's male privilege. Women can wear dresses in public without being mocked and men can't. That's female privilege. People with ethnic sounding names (aka PoC) are more likely to be turned down for jobs while "white names" won't have the same prejudice. That's white privilege. People with acne will get fewer dates than people with clear skin. That's clear skin privilege. etc, etc

It's not blaming people with the privilege to point out that it exists. It just means that some groups of people deal with one extra thing that others don't, and that is a privilege.

Here's where things went screwy;

On paper you are right; men were not directly targeted for blame in the comment.

Except it's labeled as "Male privledge". Thus framing the conversation not as one about what women do to eachother and what they can do to stop it but one of an inequality of standards;

The inference is that people SHOULD judge each other by the frequency of repeating outfits but men currently aren't. It's an unearned privledge that men aren't judged and not a basic standard of decency women deny each other.

Yes, and as a woman it is her choice to accept and internalize that criticism of her choice of clothing or reject it and decide to keep to her own opinions.

She chooses to internalize it. People criticize my clothing choices or whatever and I just keep on walking because shallow, vain assholes aren’t worth my time.

It's not about internalizing it or your reactions to criticism. It's about it happening at all. The same women who complain about a female news reporter wearing the same clothes, wouldn't do that to a man. It's about the double standard

jordantask

I’m sorry it absolutely is.

For example, your criticism about my clothing choices means as much to me as something that I scrape off the bottom of my boot. If women felt the same way such criticism would be irrelevant, and we wouldn’t even be having this conversation.

It’s about a double standard created and maintained entirely by and for women, because men don’t care.

You don’t think women would do the same thing to men if they thought it would affect us? If they did, and it worked it wouldn’t be male privilege any more, would it?

Not giving a shit is a privilege somehow?

Oh I see I thought we were still arguing semantics. Yeah I feel like the psychology behind why women criticize each other in fashion is much too nuanced to talk about with someone who clearly just hates women

jordantask

Cool because I was thinking the exact same thing about a convo with someone who clearly just hates men.

It’s not a privilege when you just don’t accept somebody else’s arbitrary expectations of you as being legitimate. If you think you should be able to wear the same dress more than once, do it. If women stopped caring what other women thought, they would all do what they wanted and those silly obligations would go away

Yup.

For around 2 years now I basically wear the same stuff: black tops and jeans and when it gets warm, some loose black dresses. Didn't get a single comment. Getting ready is easy. Shopping is stressless and I dont feel the need to constantly add to my wardrobe.

Never going back.

I’ll take it a step further and say my wife better get more than one use out of a dress. That’s just wasteful other wise.

Do people actually remember what other people have worn? I honestly could not pick out one single outfit that any of my friends have ever worn to an event. This seems like something that only happens in American movies.

Agree. I get mad that my wife has all these cute dresses that literally just take up closet space. I feel like saying “ I love you, you know I do, but stop buying new clothes and wear the shit you got!”

JohnnySasaki20

Same thing with nails. No guy ever has gone "man, look at the nails on that girl" unless it was in reference to how comically large they were. We don't care about your nails, and we only notice them when they're so absurd that they're a turn-off. We also don't care about your shoes. Wear literally whatever you want, or what's comfortable. It doesn't matter to us.

As a woman I can say I don’t give a f*ck what other women wear. I don’t think I would notice if the dress is the same. Pretty sure a lot of women don’t care too.
